Welcome to the new songs page.  This section offers the opportunity to listen to songs written by members of Winchester Family Church, as well as read the story behind how they came about.

He is Jesus

Exalted to the highest place, the name that is above all else
There is power in His name, there is power in His name
Condemnation fades away, chains are broken in His name
There is freedom in His name, there is freedom in His name

And He calls to You today
So glorify His name

He is Jesus – majestic King of all
He is Jesus – the Saviour of the world
His enduring love, bids that all may come
To know peace with God, through the Risen Son
The victorious one – His name is Jesus

Everyone who believes in Him, can know forgiveness from their sins
We’re forgiven in His name, we’re forgiven in His name
Broken lives can be made whole; those in pain can be restored
There is healing in His name, there is healing in His name

He made Himself nothing, choosing to serve us
Obedient to death, even death on a cross
Therefore God raised Him up, up to the highest place
That every knee would bow and every tongue confess

Story behind the song

I started writing the song ‘He is Jesus’ after listening to a preach by John Groves at WFC back in June 2007.  As a church we were going through a series on the 10 Commandments and examining how the laws in Exodus are applicable to us today, finding completion in Christ.  It was the talk focusing on the 3rd Commandment in Exodus 20:7 and the misuse of God’s name that birthed this song, in particular the covenantal aspects of God’s name in the Old Testament (Yahweh), and how that translates to the covenantal name we have today in Jesus Christ.

As I went away and started pulling the song together it struck me how we should be celebrating all we have in Jesus’ name.  In a society where it is commonplace to use Jesus’ name as a swear-word, we should rejoice in the right use of His name and all we have in it: salvation, freedom, eternal life, healing, forgiveness, authority and hope.

I already had the chorus melody prior to this and over the following months I began to pull together the themes from the talk into verses around it, concentrating on the privileges we have in the name of Jesus.  The pre-chorus and chorus acted as a response to these truths and a declaration of faith.  I added the end section from Philippians 2:5-11, reminding us of the great sacrifice and victory of Christ, as Paul reminds us how we should align our attitudes to that of Jesus.

My hope is that this song blesses the church, bringing joy and celebration as we consider all we have in the wonderful name of Jesus.
